I believe you must have owned a laser cutting machine, and you must have encountered cutting problems in the cutting process, such as can’t cut through, with burrs, unsmooth cutting surface, etc.

On the one hand, these problems are related to the laser power (refer to this article for how to select the laser cutting machine power), on the other hand, they are related to the cutting speed.

In fact, the question of how to calculate the laser cutting speed is an old question. Most operators with laser cutting machines will find the answer to this question.

In this article, we show you the maximum cutting thickness and corresponding cutting speed of IPG 1000-15000W fiber laser in the form of table. Of course, all the following data are for metal fiber metal cutting, such as carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, etc. For non-metallic CO2 cutting speed chart, such as acrylic and leather, you can refer to this article.

In addition, if your laser is not an IPG brand (many laser cutting machine manufacturers will use other brands, such as Amada, TRUMPF and Mitsubishi), the following table can be used for your reference, but you can appropriately reduce the value when actually adjusting the machine parameters until you find the most suitable laser cutting speed.

Laser Power: Higher-powered lasers can cut thicker materials at faster speeds. For instance, a 500W laser might cut 1mm steel at a speed of 10 m/min, while a 3kW laser can achieve 35 m/min for the same material and thickness.

Focus Position: The laser beam needs to be precisely focused. If not properly adjusted, the cutting speed can decrease, impacting the edge quality.

Assist Gases: The type and pressure of assist gases, such as oxygen, nitrogen, or air, influence the cutting speed and the quality of the cut edge.
